2009 Leadership Marshall Graduation

MARSHALL, TX – The Marshall Chamber of Commerce proudly presented 20 Leadership Marshall 2009 participants at a graduation ceremony held on Thursday evening, August 20, 2009 at OS2 Restaurant & Pub' s ballroom in historic downtown Marshall.

Chamber Board Chairman, George Carter, gave a warm welcome to the graduates and guests, which numbered nearly 70 people in attendance – the highest number in attendance on record. Chamber President and CEO, Connie Ware, introduced keynote speaker, Representative Bryan Hughes, Texas House of Representatives.

Representative Hughes presented a compelling address on being a servant and a leader. Hughes is known for demonstrating these exemplary characteristics in his personal life and in the House.

Leadership participant Debbie Lucas of Brownrigg Insurance Agency gave an invocation and class remarks were given by Louraiseal McDonald, Harrison County Extension Agent. She was assisted by Marco and Orlando Valle who presented facilitator Keli Talbert with The Most Inspirational Leader Award. Guy Barr of Marshall Christian Academy, alumni of Leadership Marshall, provided a stirring and inspirational message of commitment and responsibility.

A slideshow presentation played throughout the program and highlighted the last six months of group activities by the Leadership Marshall 2009 class and the many business and civic leaders they met in the community along the way.

Sponsored by the Marshall Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Marshall began in 1991 and continues with success bringing leaders and potential leaders into contact with the many facets of the Marshall area to provide a close business network. The program focuses on education, health care, business and industry, quality of life and tourism, city and county government and a ROPES course at Camp Fern and ETBU. It concludes with a graduation banquet and awards ceremony.

Many students say, "It's amazing that you can live here all your life and yet learn so much through Leadership Marshall!”

Most every participant will agree that the program puts you in touch with every facet of the community in a personal way. You walk away knowing where and who to call when the program ends. The friendships and partnerships you build along the way enhance the leadership experience. Everyone was sad to see it end so soon. However, hopefully, they will take with them what they learned during the six-month course and utilize it to become better employees, better volunteers, and better citizens. Many of them are already demonstrating just that.

Suzon Tropaz Holmes identified the need of microscopes for the science classroom at Trinity Episcopal School and to everyone's surprise, ordered microscopes and had them shipped to the school. Orlando Valle is now serving as a Knight of Columbus. Marco Valle strengthened his commitment to Marshall, making the decision to stay in Marshall in order to serve this community. He also joined the Chamber Ambassador program. Juan Diaz also became a Chamber Ambassador. Marco, Orlando and Juan are also a part of the Chamber's Hispanic Business Alliance under the direction of Keli Talbert. Courtney Smith delivered the keynote address at Wiley's Leadership Conference and is pursuing a degree in criminal justice at Wiley. Gareth Juays seized the opportunity to ride along with the Marshall Police Department so that he could learn and more fully appreciate all our officers do.

"The Leadership Marshall course is inherently designed to promote community awareness, personal growth, communication, and involvement which make us better citizens,” said program facilitator, Keli Talbert, Business Development Director for the Chamber of Commerce. "We had an amazing group of leaders who are committed to making a difference within their spheres of influence, which ultimately impacts our community. Obviously you can look for great things from this group as they are already demonstrating. I feel so fortunate to have spent time with them. All of them are of exemplary character. My life is better because of them! It's exciting to think how much they will affect life for all of us in such a positive way.”

Grand opening: Eastex Dental Academy

Grand Openings July 6-10 2009 036.jpg

(Marshall, TX) Recently the Marshall Chamber of Commerce staff, board members and Ambassadors gathered with civic leaders, media, and friends to celebrate a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for Eastex Dental Academy owned and operated by Terrie Jarvis.

Eastex Dental Academy is operated out of the dental offices of Daniel Balderrama, DDS PA at 2602 S. Washington in Marshall.

The Eastex Dental Academy program ensures the students are ready to “hit the ground running” when they graduate from my program. They are taught the skills necessary to be able to claim the status of a professional dental assistant – as an expanded dental assistant – which means they have learned and can perform extra duties such as: making and placing temporary crowns and bridges; taking, pouring and trimming dental models; making whiting trays, sports mouth guards, and in-office bite guards; placing and removing rubber dams, removing sutures, and packing cord. They have chair-side skills in four-handed dentistry, and can take four different types of dental x-rays which are: 4 bitewings, 7 bitewings, FMX (18 x-rays) and a Pano x-ray. They can also perform in-office bleaching on patients.

Students from Eastex Dental Academy also must graduate with their Registered Dental Assisting (RDA) license issued from the State of Texas. Eastex is the only school that requires the students to have their license before graduation.

Eastex teaches interviewing skills, performs mock interviews, and provides assistance with resumes. Students graduate with a portfolio of the items they crafted using their extensive knowledge learned in class to show the hiring dentists what they can actually do as a dental assistant, which sets them apart from other candidates.

Since Jarvis started the program, she has the best placement rates in the state of Texas at 91%. She hopes to keep the momentum going up just as the demand for these critical positions keep rising.

Special guests included Jarvis's parents, son and current students: Courtney Lewis, Kimberly Craft, Sarah Ard, Amy Gay, and Stephanie Dunham.

Grand Openings July 6-10 2009 048.jpg

Woodforest National Bank is celebrating 29 years of banking success. They strive to make the customers’ experience simple and convenient and offer more flexible banking hours than most traditional banks.

In 1980, Woodforest National Bank opened its first branch in the Houston, Texas market. In 1996, they opened their first in-store branch, offering customers the convenience of seven-day-a-week full service banking with extended hours. In 2001, Woodforest opened its first branch in Marshall, Texas inside Wal-Mart. In 2003, they added an additional location inside Marshall’s Kroger store. Both branches are open seven days a week, 364 days a year.

Today, Woodforest has more than 600 branch locations in 16 states and even with talk of an economic downturn, they remain a strong banking force having used wise strategies to keep them at the top. Woodforest is known to give “second chance banking” and their motto is “Banking your way…EVERY DAY AND NIGHT!”

Hispanic Alliance Progress Report

Please mark your calendars for our next Hispanic Alliance meeting on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at Miguel's Authentic Mexican Restaurant at 5:00 PM.

At our last meeting, we discussed our final production of the alliance's push cards in Spanish to be distributed to restaurants, etc. subject to board approval; Leadership Marshall 2009 which kicks off March 26; a document we've converted to Spanish regarding permits and licenses through the State of Texas which will go on our website and be available in our offices; a window decal for businesses that offer bilingual services; and a very nice article in Vita Latina magazine featuring area Hispanic Business Alliances that included our alliance (Thank you, Vita!). If you haven't picked up a free copy, please come by our office or visit Avelar y Asociados, El Paisiana, Fruteria Perlita, or La Potosina -- all here in Marshall.

Judge William Hughey noted that the legal system needs qualified translators who are trained specifically to use, understand, and interpret legal terminology. We also discussed the possibility of connecting Command Spanish instruction with targeted career fields, such as law enforcement and firefighters, sales and marketing specialists, medical personnel, etc.

Dr. Bernardo Roman-Beato and Norma Latham previously contributed greatly toward the creation of a survey that may be used in the Hispanic community for identifying future projects of the alliance.

Additionally, we discussed the upcoming Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 2.

If you know of food or business vendors that might be interested in participating at the Cinco de Mayo festival, please email them to our alliance member, Carmen Ibarra, at cibarra@marshallhs.org or you can email them to me and I will forward them on to her. Please help us spread the word about the festival this year. Carmen will be sharing flyers with us to hand out very soon. She is also interested in finding quality entertainment for no cost or at least a minimal charge. If you have ideas, please let us know!

Also, if you know of someone who would make a great candidate for our outstanding Leadership Marshall program, please send me their name and contact information. We're processing applications now and sincerely want a nice cross-section of our community represented in the program. The program helps people learn about the community in a way that is positive and thorough. We have an aggressive and robust agenda, packed full of various forums covering topics such as: education, business & industry, health care, city & county government, and quality of life. Through these meetings and tours, participants connect with leaders in virtually every segment of the community. And through it all, they learn important qualities of leadership. The class is recognized at the Business & Industry luncheon at the Civic Center in May and they are honored at a graduation banquet held in August.

The response from other alliance leaders in the area for creating a regional alliance have all been favorable. We are awaiting the response of one or two more and we should be able to set a date for our first regional meeting! We'll keep you posted!

On May 15, Vita Latina magazine and La Invasora radio are hosting the Noche De Gala Hispanic Ball 2009 at the Bossier City Civic Center. Josie Liston, Eva Morales, and I plan to attend. Those of you who are interested in attending with us, visit www.vitalatinamagazine.com or call 318-286-5407. You may also email Vita Riner at vitariner@aol.com. Let her know that you are with the Marshall Chamber of Commerce's Hispanic Alliance. It promises to be a great event!

Last, but not least, we know everyone is busy and the very fact that you are a part of our alliance means you are recognized as a leader. We appreciate your time, effort and every contribution you make to ensure the Hispanic Alliance is a successful venture. We know that when we help others succeed, it makes the world around us a much better place. Please continue to share your ideas by email, by phone and at our meetings. (Don't forget! Next meeting is Thursday, April 23 at 5:00 PM at Miguel's!)

Thank you for your time.

Respectfully yours,

Keli Talbert

Leadership Marshall program seeking nominations for 2009

Chamber’s Leadership Marshall program seeking nominations for 2009 participants

Leadership Marshall, an annual leadership program sponsored by the Marshall Chamber of Commerce, announced they are seeking nominations for the 2009 class which kicks off in late March.

“This program has been carefully planned and successfully executed for many years,” said Keli Talbert, Business Development Director of the Marshall Chamber of Commerce. “Leadership Marshall graduates walk away with a comprehensive knowledge of the Marshall area and its infrastructure. Those participants that have been long-time residents of Marshall commonly say that they could have lived here a lifetime and not learned what they learn in our leadership program. If you look at our impressive and extensive list of graduates, you will find most of them have taken on leadership roles in the community or have risen to the top in their careers. Either way, they are having a positive impact within the community.”

The quality of leadership in any community is not to be taken for granted. New leaders must be trained, educated and informed. Leadership Marshall is a concentrated training program expressly designed with the purpose of identifying potential leaders to assume roles of leadership in our community; training emerging leaders in leadership skills; and broadening the understanding of potential leaders in the various governmental, educational, societal, technological and economical forces which impact Marshall, Harrison County, and the State of Texas.

Classes meet once a month, March through August. Each class is a day-long program, from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, one Wednesday of each month. The classes prepare and motivate participants by providing exposure and perspective in diversified areas of interest and concern. Class members have the opportunity to meet and ask questions of community leaders and other qualified speakers. Field trips are conducted to locations pertinent to the subject matter of the day.

Tuition is $350, which covers meals, supplies, and some transportation. The cost of the Marshall program has remained lower than the fees associated with other programs in the area. A few scholarships may be available to those who demonstrate need. Participants should indicate their need for a scholarship when applying to the program. Each request will be handled on an individual basis. Meals are provided by the program and sponsors.

As for eligibility, Leadership Marshall participants must be at least 22 years old and either have demonstrated an interest in the community by his/her involvement in organization activities related to the betterment of the area or have a desire to become more informed about the community. A representative group of up to 30 students will be selected.

Candidates may be recommended by their employer, their organization, a graduate of the Leadership Marshall program, or they may nominate themselves. The program seeks people at or near the top of their organization who have demonstrated leadership and a commitment to helping the community.

Applications are available online or at the Chamber offices at 213 W. Austin and should be received at the Chamber by Friday, March 13 for review and processing. Contact The Marshall Chamber of Commerce today for more information at 903-935-7868 or visit the at Leadership Marshall webpage.

Personal leadership training features instruction or a speaker addressing the topic of leadership skills. Topics include communication skills, stress management, goal setting, positive and professional attitudes, dealing with critical people and leading with passion. With sessions focused on economic development, business and industry, health care, education, city and county government, quality of life, tourism, and the Marshall Chamber of Commerce, the program provides an overview of the status and future of economic development in Harrison County and Texas. The role of the Chamber of Commerce and other associations in advancing the commercial, financial, industrial and civic interests of our community will be explored. By interacting with local and state officials, the class has the opportunity to learn about the operations, functions, infrastructures, decision making process, and future plans of our local and state government.

Formed by the Board of Directors of the Marshall Chamber of Commerce, the first class of Leadership Marshall began in 1991. Today, Marshall's program continues to be a premier Leadership program in East Texas. Under the auspices of the Chamber of Commerce, the program continues to be a commitment to the future and the leadership that will be needed to meet the demands of tomorrow for the Harrison County area. Be a part of the solution. Call today and apply.
